What is a sensory assessment?

Some young people (and adults) are different from others in how they notice and respond to sensory input, sound, smell. movement and taste. If a person’s sensory needs affect how they cope in different environments and join in with activities then we might carry out a sensory assessment. We use a standardised sensory questionnaire which is completed by parents/carers, teachers or the young person (depending on their age and ability) in person or online (via a link sent by email). The findings of this assessment will be analysed by the occupational therapist who will make individualised recommendations to make it easier for the young person to participate in activities like other children of his or her age.

Parents may also be invited to attend a workshop session, designed to support them with managing their child’s sensory needs.
